If I recall correctly, the baby characters in Mario Kart were useless in comparison to their older selves. They were fast as sin because of how light they were, but on some tracks — cough, Rainbow Road, cough — that wasn’t exactly the kind of driving style you needed if you wanted any chance of winning.
